Week 9 - Space + Art

In this week's class discussion we went over how space and art relate to one another. This topic pretty much talks about everything we have covered in the class over the quarter. The concept of space is very interesting but when you combine it with the idea of art it turns it into a whole different dimension and spectrum in our world. One of the artist in the Leonardo Space At Project, Arthur Woods said "The continued exploration and exploitation of the space environment are essential to the future survival and prosperity of the human species (Leonardo Space Art Project). It's really interesting to think that space is a whole other area that we have just scratched the surface to, there is a whole other world beyond that. A lot of pop culture and sci-fi shows use space just because a lot of people find it really fascinating.

One of the most popular franchises that use space as their main theme is Star Wars. Yes, it is completely fictional, but beyond our Milky Way galaxy there are many different belts and planets that we have yet to discover, and Star Wars shines a light upon that with their made up planets. Some planets are purely ice, some are sand, and and some have an suburban life like Downtown Los Angeles. It also connects the ideas of space and art and uses the idea of creating spaceships that you could only believe beyond your wildest imagination, such as the Millenium Falcon. The Millenium Falcon is one of the most popular sci-fi spaceships in movies. It takes ideas of art and created this spaceship that is so amazing that many people are in awe when they see the physics behind the making of the Falcon. The infamous Death Star also uses some fictional ideas of being a planet-destroyer and it takes some aspects of art in the way it is constructed and the way it looks as being depicted here.

One of other well known movies that uses space is E.T. It gave people a new perspective as to how to look into space and our galaxy. It showed that space is mysterious and that there are many things hidden beyond what we know.

Space allows artists to discover a whole new side to art because they can correlate in almost every aspect.
