Week 7- Neurosci + Art

Art depiction of Brainbow Hippocampus

When I think of neuroscience, the first thing that comes to mind is the brain and all the wiring and manipulations people can do with it. Neuroscience is like the art that the mind thinks it sees or perceives. Our brains are very complex and intricate and it is very interesting when people create art with the human brain. Like for example this image to the left is from Greg Dunn and he created the "Brainbow Hippocampus" which depicts the fascinating what looks like signals of the brain. It shows the neuronic signals that travel from the brain to the hippocampus.
In the article Neuroculture it states that, "Neurocultural products not only draw inspiration from the beauty and wonders of brain anatomy and mechanisms" (Frazetto and Anker). From this quote I understand that people even create images of the brain that are also not the best, some may be gruesome but it is still considered art regardless.

The idea of being able to visualize dreams when the mind is asleep but still conscious is very interesting. Sigmund Freud mentions how the mind can be divided into the conscious and unconscious. I've always wondered if there could be a way to watch your dreams by having to be hooked up to an electroencephalography (EEG) machine and being wired to visualize what happens during a nights sleep. In The Spiritual Problem of Modern Man, there is a quote that says, "It requires the most intensive and extensive consciousness, with a minimum of unconsciousness" (Jung). What Jung is saying from my perception is that the mind has to be mentally strong and be focused otherwise it wanders to other places.

When I think of the mind and art, I immediately think about Dia De Los Muertos or the Day of the Dead celebration in Hispanic culture. The sugar skull is used to signify and celebrate of the people that passed away from one's family. This creation brings together so many people of one culture while also showing signs of art in neuroscience.
