Week 4 - MedTech + Art

When I think of art and medicine, I do not see any way they could correlate since they are in two entirely different spectrums. But, then I think of today's technology and how the da Vinci robot is commonly used in surgeries as well as other medical advancements in technology. For anyone who has never heard of the da Vinci robot, it is used an alternative for a surgeon's hand so its movements can be mimicked to be broken down into smaller, precise movements instead. One of the key instruments that are used in this type of robotics is the laparoscope which is a tiny tube that has a camera which sends images to the surgeon in the operating room which helps the surgeon guide his operation the right way. I remember when my grandpa has surgery to remove his prostate they used the da Vinci robot during the operation.

The Hippocratic Oath is one of the oldest documents that discuss medical ethics. His oath is still used by physicians today when you talk about patient's privacy and treating someone to the best of the ability you can. There have been many changes in the medical field, but the basics of it still haven't changed. Physicians have to take this oath and swear they will abide by the rules and follow this in their practice

In 1889, Thomas Eakins created an oil painting called "The Agnew Clinic" which shows Dr. Agnew doing a mastectomy in a medical amphitheater. This really helped me understand medicine and how it is related to art. I see how art can show a lot in medicine because this art depiction is so accurate and precise as to how a surgeon performs a surgery.

I also went to the Body's World exhibit back in June 2017 at the California Science Center, I was able to see how this style of art was very amusing to look at and it was interesting to see how these artists created these figures. Art is very interesting especially when it has to do with medicine because it relates to my field of nursing.

  1. I loved how you juxtaposed the cutting edge surgery machine with Da Vinci's art! I also wrote about the Body World due to its appealing visual construct and close relation to the modern day anatomy. I would definitely agree that there is a high correlation between the two fields of study.
